Work History

Librarian

University of Botswana
10.2014 - Current
  • University of Botswana, Faculty of Medicine research output collating and reporting: collecting of research outputs of all the ten departments in the and reporting them quarterly and annually. The reporting is aimed at both reporting the research impact and facilitating the archiving of the research outcomes in the university Research Management System and the institutional repository.
  • University systematic reviews service librarian (reviews, scope reviews, rapid reviews, meta-analysis, etc): Developing and formalizing the systematic review service in the University of Botswana. Offering support for systematic review projects (more than 50 projects and other consultancies). Capacity building (training/workshops) for library staffing, Faculty of Medicine and Medical students, University of Botswana Post-graduate students (over 250 attendants), teaching and co-supervision (MBBS-IV Systematic Review Elective as a Covid-19 Emergency Teaching Intervention) and core-teaching in the Department of Library and Information Studies (systematic searching). I also provide capacity building, mentoring, and coaching on evidence synthesis (systematic reviews) through the Network of African Medical Librarians (NAML).
  • Writing retreat: planning and facilitating the Faculty of Medicine five-day writing retreat where faculty and residents/postgraduate students submit their topics and are included in the five-day writing retreat. The five days include presentations on writing introductions, methods, results, and discussions (attendants then write over the five days and they are provided with critical readers such that they leave the retreat with a complete manuscript. And for myself I focus on resourcing (providing time for brainstorming and searching for and providing information sources) all the topics, making presentations on how and where to search for information resources, how to manage the data, where to publish (informing the decision with specific topics such as evaluating a journal, identifying predatory journals, etc).
  • Information Literacy: Provide training to faculty and students (undergraduates/MBBS and Postgraduates/GME) on library online resources mainly the Databases like [Ebscohost, Ucentral, PubMed, Medline, ERIC, Web of Science, ClinicalKey, VisualDx, UpToDate, HINARI Online journals and eBooks, etc.]. Teaching information literacy in the MBBS program and examining it through the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).
  • Curriculum development and review: Contribute to the development of the Information Literary Curriculum for the University of Botswana Library offered or delivered in partnership with the University of Botswana Continuous Study Skills (Department under Centre for Academic Development). Review of the University of Botswana Faculty of Medicine curriculum introducing embedded information literacy and other areas of importance such as indigenous knowledge, traditional medicine, etc. Contributed to the development module and the course material and training for the health informatics library module Development of the curriculum for the Diploma in Health Information Science (HIS) that graduated its first cohort on September 4, 2020, at the Centre for Education Development in Health Arusha (CEDHA). We developed the curriculum as the Network of African Medical Librarians (NAML) and the curriculum was first tested in Tanzania.
  • MLearning: To ensure continued and seamless access to learning and clinical information, communication, and collaboration between residents, medical students, and faculty, the UBFoM implemented a mlearning project. Students and faculty were given tablets pre-loaded with medical information resources in the form of medical apps and guidelines. The mlearning project was part of a broader eLearning strategy implemented to support medical education (Kebaetse 2014; Kebaetse 2016) and funded through the United States Government-funded Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI). The mlearning project was implemented by a diverse team of personnel, including the Botswana-UPenn Partnership (BUP) who pioneered mHealth work in Botswana, UB support professionals, an educational technologist, medical librarians, and Information Technology (IT) specialists.
  • Tablet project (mLearning): Offering support services like tablet/smartphone configuration, medical databases installation and authentication, and user training and support. Develop guidelines for device set-up and configuration for Blackberry, Android, and IOS. Also, guidelines for using medical applications such as UpToDate, Skyscape, Medscape, Ebscohost, Ucentral, and PubMed.
  • Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD): Towards the end of United States Government-funded Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) funding for mLearning, the implementation team explored BYOD as a sustainable option for institutionally provided devices. Students and faculty would use their mobile devices, thus relieving the FoM from the pressure of procuring and issuing institutional devices. We soon learned that such a transition from institutionally provided mobile devices to personally owned mobile devices required a guiding policy. Due to the paucity of medical education literature on examples of BYOD policies the team conducted a semi-systematic review of the literature to explore various components that could potentially inform BYOD policy formulation.
  • Reference Management Software: provision of reference management software (EndNote, Mendeley, and Zotero). The service includes Installation and provision of end-user training and Continued Support for Faculty and Students. As a Mendeley Advisor, I have also been providing reference management software training to other institutions such as the Institute of Health Sciences Gaborone, Botswana Open University, and other regional institutions and researchers through the Association for Health Information and Libraries in Africa (AHILA) –Nigeria chapter and Network of African Medical Librarians (NAML).
  • Wikipedia Project - The project is a partnership between the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Botswana Library. The project includes training on creating accounts on Wikipedia, editing articles on Wikipedia, and writing articles or pages on Wikipedia.
  • Community outreach: Access to and use of health information resources normally offered to the Nurses through workshops and conferences. The trainings often cover a lot of databases that are open access to support users beyond the institutional subscription-based resources. Other routine tasks such as: Non-systematic literature searching training and support (searching and retrieval of information sources mainly journal articles): mainly for faculty and postgraduate students.
  • Institutional Repository: publications are harvested and uploaded onto The University of Botswana Library institutional repository named UBRISA.
  • Collection Development Policy: develop a collection development policy for the University of Botswana Library.
  • Library LibGuides development: develop LibGuides for the University of Botswana Library.

  • Harvesting of Materials: college research output and other strategic documentation were collected for archival purposes as per the institutional repository requirements.

  • Question & Answer Service: The college library has a service targeted at assisting farmers in improving their farming methods through researched information and most importantly supporting their development projects including funding proposals. The service was about receiving requests for information and such information will be searched, retrieved, and delivered via mail or where possible over the counter.

It being a depository came with a responsibility of pro-actively providing access and exhibitions were done mostly at the agriculture fairs, tertiary education fairs, business community fairs, and events including World Food Day which is celebrated every year in Botswana.
  • Periodicals: The special collections had the responsibility of building a strong collection of newspapers to support learning and most importantly research. The newspapers were collected, binding consignments were prepared and collections were sent out for binding every year. The periodicals collections apart from newspapers also included the Agrinews magazine and Government Gazette and Agrinews.
  • Botswana Collection: Local Publication (Books and periodicals) were collected and that means all the titles published in and about Botswana were collected to build a collection of local publications.
